Doha, one afternoon at a time.
Which dune run actually reaches the Inland Sea. What a dhow hour costs at the old harbour. Whether a six-hour layover is enough for Souq Waqif. Every tour in Qatar, reviewed.
The six days Qatar is known for.
Dune bashing to the salt flats, an hour on a wooden dhow, the souq once the heat drops, and the long drive south to where the sea runs inland. The days most Doha trips are built around.
Qatar’s desert: pick the run that suits you.
Every safari, compared →
Every safari leaves Doha the same way and then splits: a fast afternoon over the Sealine dunes, a full run down to Khor Al Adaid, or a night at camp with the engines off. These three carry the most travellers.

Half a day on the Sealine sand
Tyres down at the edge of the sand belt, an hour of dune bashing, a stop on a ridge for the light, and back to Doha before dinner.
What travellers in Doha actually book.

Doha only gets going once the heat lets go.
Nothing much happens outdoors here at four in the afternoon. By eight the Corniche is walking pace, the souq courtyards are full, and the dhow lights are on the water. The evening is the real half of a Doha day.
Souq Waqif is the oldest room in the city.
Rebuilt in mud render on its own foundations, the souq still trades in what it always traded in: spice, cloth, oud, and birds. Go at dusk, start at the falcon hospital, and let the lanes take you toward Katara.
A Hamad layover is long enough for Doha.
Immigration is quick, the airport sits fifteen minutes from the Corniche, and the city is compact enough that six hours buys the souq, the museum quarter and a dhow hour. Anything under five, stay on the coast road.

What a day in Qatar costs.
Every tour on the site, sorted by what it actually costs. A shared desert run and a private car for the day are not in the same league.
The standard desert safari, the Inland Sea run, dinner cruises, half-day city loops with a guide.

Three things Qatar has and the rest of the Gulf does not.
Skyscrapers and shopping malls repeat all the way down the coast. The inland sea, the steel in the desert and the racing camels belong to this peninsula alone.

The Sea That Runs Inland
Sixty kilometres south of Doha the Gulf pushes a tidal inlet straight into the dune field, and the dunes come down to the water on both sides. UNESCO lists it as a nature reserve. There is no sealed road: the last stretch is soft sand, which is why every trip out there is a 4x4 convoy and why the tide table decides the timing.

Four Steel Plates in the Desert
An hour and a half west of the city, on a gravel plain nobody was using, stand four steel plates by Richard Serra, each over fourteen metres tall, spaced a kilometre apart along a former sea bed. The piece is called East-West/West-East. Go late: the plates catch the last hour of light, and the limestone mushroom rocks nearby are on the same track.

Camels, and Robot Jockeys
Qatar races camels on a track west of Doha with radio-controlled robot jockeys strapped to the saddles, while the owners drive alongside the rail working the reins by remote. Racing runs through the cooler months and mornings are the sessions worth catching. Entry to the track itself costs nothing.

Qatar in summer is an indoor country.
From June to September the middle of the day is not negotiable: the heat sits in the forties and the humidity comes off the Gulf. The answer is the museum quarter, a long lunch, the air-conditioned half of the souq, and everything outdoors pushed past sunset.
